At its core, motherhood is a form of discipleship. Raising children in the name of the Lord, teaching identity and truth, modeling forgiveness and faith – these are the very seeds that shape generations.

2 Timothy 1:5
I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded, now lives in you also.

Paul, talking to Timothy, “I am reminded of your sincere faith.” The faith Timothy displayed to Paul was learned through the example of his grandmother and mother. The Greek word for “sincere” means “undisguised.” I think of social media and the façade that is all too real. I know when I was on it, when taking pictures to post, I would make sure any mess that would be seen was pushed out of the way of the frame. I would hate for someone to think of me disheveled or messy. “I must have it together!” “My house must not appear to be lived in!” are thoughts that went through my mind. What did I think I was hiding? The people online might not see it, but my kids did.

Kid are smart and they pick up on things. What is the idea here? If you live it, they will catch it. Kids will catch your faith!

“I am reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice…” The word “lived” is better translated as “dwelt.” A dwelling is a house or place where people live. What is being said here is that faith took residence in the lives of Lois and Eunice. Faith was part of their everyday lives. On the good days and on the bad days, faith was present.

We do not know a lot about Lois or Eunice, but we do know that their sincere faith encouraged Timothy’s own faith. Because of their influence, Timothy was used by God to bless the saints and further the gospel. For Paul to point out Lois and Eunice’s faith, means that he witnessed evidence of their faith when he was in Lystra. Whether their faith was witnessed in their actions or words, their belief and trust in God was clear and impactful.

Let this encourage you to continue in your genuine relationship with Christ. Teach the Bible. Have real faith. Pray with and for your children. The greatest gift I can think of on this Mother’s Day is to know my children follow Christ. If your kids aren’t there yet, keep praying. You never know how the Holy Spirit will move upon them! For those that do not have biological or adopted children, keep living boldly in faith for your spiritual children. They are watching.

Mothers of Cornerstone, you are seen. You are doing an amazing job. Happy Mother’s Day!
